| PDP, Cong up for showdown on LC chairman elections | | |
Jammu, July 4: Amidst bitterness among the coalition partners, a muscle flexing has begun in the political circles for the post of Chairman of the Legislative Council. Since the coalition partners Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress are not in a position to arrive at a friendly consensus, the elections for the coveted post have been necessitated. The Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Lt. Gen (Retd) S.K. Sinha has fixed July 20, 2007 as the date on which the election of the Chairman, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council shall be held. Even though the former Power Minister and kin of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, MLC Mohammad Sharief Niaz is reported to be a key contender for the post but sources said that the Peoples Democratic Party is not likely to yield to the Congress. PDP is planning to push their own candidate, though the party is yet to decide about the candidature. “The post of Assembly Speaker is held by the Congress and therefore going by convention the post of Legislative Council Chairman should come to us”, said a senior PDP leader who indicated that there is not going to be a friendly contest. Congress has highest number of members in the Legislative Council while the Peoples Democratic Party is eyeing at cross voting. However, in view of NC’s traditional rivalry with the PDP, the Congress is likely to have the last laugh on the LC elections.
