Lal masjid fallout: JK May witness drop in rate of ingress in coming months
7/7/2007 12:16:54 AM

Jammu,July 6
Will the bloody incident in Lal Masjid in Islamabad, prompting Gen. Musharraf to order a crackdown on Jehadis camping in the mosque, have some impact on the crossborder terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir ?This question is being debated in the Army and the police circles in the state.
According to Defence Ministry sources, the ongoing conflict between the establishment and the Jehadis in Pakistan may have some direct impact on the rate of infiltration. Already more than 3,000 militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, were brought close the LOC across Poonch,Rajouri and Kupwara for purpose of pushing them into Jammu and Kashmir. Once the Pakistani Army, under the command of Gen.Musharraf, decide to deal firmly with the Jehadis the rate of ingress from across the LOC would further decline.
Reports from across the border reveal that jehadis feel “demoralised” over the way those, who had vowed to carry out suicide attacks in Pakistan, surrendered before the troops and some of them, including the Chief cleric, tried to escape under the cover of a Burqa. He has been arrested. It may force the Jehadis to be on the defensive.
Defence Ministry sources said that in case the Jehadis took the upper hand they may be able to implement their plan of escalating the level of violence months before the next Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir, due in September-October 2008.
However, police sources said that the crackdown on Jehadis in Pakistan may create a situation in which large groups of militants may try to escape into Jammu and Kashmir to ward off their arrest and torture. They said that since fundamentalists had infiltrated into the Pakistan Army they may not follow the instructions of Gen. Musharraf in letter and spirit. Those soldiers committed to fundamentalism would continue to aid and abet infiltration of trained rebels into Jammu and Kashmir.
The sources said that once the level of infiltration and militancy related violence in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an upward trend it may not only retard the ongoing peace process but force Delhi to suspend the dialogue with Islamabad. They said Pakistan Army’s assistance to jehadis in crossing over to Jammu and Kashmir cannot be ruled out because the troops would try to reduce the level of friction and tension in Pakistan. The Army authorities in Pakistan do not also rule out the possibility of Jehadis carrying out Fidayeen attacks on Government installations, political leaders and the Army units. In a bid to war of such a situation the Pakistani Army would not hesitate pushing the militants into Jammu and Kashmir in the name of Jehad in Kashmir.
In the context of these possibilities the security forces have been directed directed not to lower their guard. Those guarding the LOC have been asked to remain vigilant and continue round the clock patrolling on the border
