JKP Mountaineering team aims to conquer Mount Everest soon: DGP

Srinagar, August 10 – The Financial Commissioner Home, Mr. B.R.Kundal flagged off 19 member Police Mountaineering Expedition Team – 2006 from Police Headquarters (PHQ) here today to scale 7140 meters high NUN Peak situated 85 k.metres South of Kargil in Ladakh region. Nun Peak is highest feature in the Zanaskar Range of Suru region which presents formidable challenge to the climbers. The Mountaineering Expedition team of Jammu and Kashmir Police is likely to accomplish this mission in September this year.
Last year, this team scaled successfully Stock Kangri peak situated in Ladakh region and all these mountaineering expeditions are prelude to accomplish successfully the ‘Mission Everest’, which the Jammu and Kashmir Police aspires to scale by the year 2008-2009.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kundal, who was the chief guest, said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police is playing vital role in promoting various sports events in the state, especially the adventure tourism, which would go a long way in promoting the adventure tourism in the state, he said. He said that the nature has gifted the state with rich bounty of high mountains, lakes and rivers which offer enough opportunities to the adventure sports lovers to excel in this field and added that this should be exploited to generate the income to the state.
Complementing the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their contribution to turn around the situation towards normalcy, Mr. Kundal hoped that the J & K Police will also achieve the excellence in adventure sports and will bring laurels to the state in national and international competitions .
Addressing on the occasion, the Director General of Police, Mr. Gopal Sharma said that encouraged by J & K Police over its superb performance last year by successfully scaling the highest mountain peaks of Stock Kangri, this year’s expedition is being sent to scale the formidable NUN peak in Zanaskar region. He said that the mountaineering expedition needs physical fitness and mental aptitude on the part of climbers to face the various challenges while climbing lofty snow caped peaks and this team has all these capabilities to achieve this mission successfully. He said that the purpose of this expedition is besides, attracting local youth to come forward and take part in adventure sports and train the J & K Police personnel in adventure sports in order to enhance their efficiency to carry out rescue and relief operations in high altitude areas hit by avalanches and other natural calamities.
Mr. Sharma said that scaling Mount Everest by its men is cherished dream and is high on J & K Police agenda. He said that the goal to scale the mighty Mount Everest will be hopefully accomplished within next two years. He said that scaling of NUN Peak this year and Stcok Kangri during the year 2005 is preliminary exercise to scale the Mount Everest and fly the flag of Jammu and Kashmir Police on it by the year 2009.
The Director General of Police said in the first phase the Jammu and Kashmir Police has drawn e said 0000100 jawans from the Armed Police and were trained in the basic course of mountaineering under the aegis of Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Pahalgam in two batches. 40 jawans who secured ‘A’ Grade in the advance course and 20 of them subsequently participated last year in scaling the Stock Kangri. This year’s expedition team was also trained in the same Institute, he said. Mr. Sharma said that Jammu and Kashmir Police provides all facilities and training expenses to the personnel under going training in the mountaineering expedition at Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Pahalgam and would train more talented youth of the Jammu and Kashmir Police so that they could participate in adventure sports activities in future as well.
Earlier the Additional Director General of Police Armed, Mr. P.S.Gill briefed the Financial Commissioner Home and Director General of Police about the adventure sports that has been taken up lately and said the NUN expedition will go a long way in promoting the discipline in the police force. He said that the police personnel are evincing keen interest in such expedition and other sports activities
On the occasion, Mr. Gill also introduced the team members to the Financial .Commissioner Home and Director General of Police and showed the latest equipment provided to the expedition team.
In his welcome address, the Inspector General of Police Armed, Sheikh Owais Ahmed, said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police is aiming high and flagging off this expedition team was a part of excellence which Jammu and Kashmir Police is looking for.
Before the flag off Ceremony, the Financial Commissioner, Director General Police, ADG Armed and other senior police officers wished the team members all successful and hoped that they will have their destination touched.
The flag off ceremony which was attended by among others included, Additional Director General of Police, CID, Mr. Kuldeep Khuda, Additional Director General of Police, Mr. Madan Lal, Vigilance Commissioner, Dr.A.K.Bhan, Inspectors General of Police, Mr. J.A.Makhdoomi, Mr. Navin Aggarwal, Mr. S.M.Sahai, Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Mr. Z.H.Chisti, Mr. Farooq Ahmed, SPs. Mr. Afadul Mujtaba, Mr. Showkat Ahmed, Zonal, SPs and Srinagar based Commandants of Armed/IRP.
