Water scarcity to be overcome by end of year:Dr. Romesh

JAMMU, JULY 06
Minister of State for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Dr. Romesh Chander Sharma while interacting with mediapersons today disclosed that Sitlee Filtration Plant whose earlier structure was washed off due to floods would be commissioned by the end of this year.
He informed that the executing agencies are working round the clock to construct the project within stipulated time frame. He said that the construction work was hampered twice due to onslaught of floods and de-silting had to be carried out thereby delaying the project.
The Minister assured restoration of adequate drinking water supply by the end of current year after re-commissioning of sitlee filtration plant. He appealed the people to use drinking water judiciously. He informed that on the construction of filtration plant prevalent water crisis would be overcome. He said that then and only then not only regular water supply but water will be available twice a day to the general masses. He asked the Chief Engineers of PDD and PHE to personally monitor the construction work of the Plant so as to fulfill day-to-day requirement of drinking water.
Mr. Sharma stated that presently construction work has come up beyond the water level, therefore there is no apprehension of stoppage of work as assured by Chief Engineer PHE Mr. V K Goswami.
It was informed that Jammu city needs 35 million gallon of water per day. Presently 24 million gallon water is being catered after boring new bore wells apart from 50 regular tanker service by ERA in the city. There is still a shortage of 11 million gallon of water per day.
The ERA representative informed 22 tube wells are under construction in Jammu East as against 27 in Jammu West.
Chief Engineer M&RE Mr. D. S. Pawar informed that 13 grid stations and 70 receiving stations are being constructed under Prime Minister Reconstruction Programme. He said that PDD have dedicated power supply stations to PHE without any curtailment of power for ensuring regular supply of water in 24 hours. He said that resultant low voltage is merely because of seasonal use of power. The department is putting in best to bridge the gap between power supply and demand of the public.
