| Jammu's event of history in limbo, authorities clueless | | KAS selected candidates loosing enthusiasm as case still hangs on Supreme Court | |
NIRBHAY JAMMUAL Jammu, July 6: The milestone historical achievement of Jammu region by scoring well in the sate combined services is till in the limbo as authorities are completely clueless about the appointment of candidates who qualified the KAS examination through Public Service Commission. The list of the KAS candidates in which Jammu region fared extremely well is hanging in balance even after declaration of result as a writ petition is pending in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case in August and it is not certain which way the decision is taken as there are many glaring points before the judges from petitioners as well as from Defence. It may be mentioned here that this was first time ever that Jammu region fared well in any examination at a higher level. When it is talked about the representation of Jammu region in the state civil services or bureaucracy it comes out to dismal. It may take several decades to undo the imbalance as in state services the officers from Jammu region are quite few and that too at insignificant posts. Out of over 130 candidates selected by the Public Service Commission for Jammu and Kashmir Combined Services, popularly known as Kashmir Administrative Services, 97 belonged to Jammu region. This was first time ever in the history of Jammu and Kashmir that in any examination more candidates from Jammu region found their way. In this examination, the Jammu district alone scored more number of seats than the entire Kashmir Valley. As against 28 seats of all six districts of Kashmir Valley, Jammu district alone had 34 successful candidates in the list. Doda district was at second number by scoring 24 seats. Even though the people were engaged in debates on how to improve or atleast maintain this trend, that the selected candidates are loosing their enthusiasm. "Though I have been selected for KAS but I had also appeared for the post of lecturers. I am now waiting for the result of lecturers as the fate of KAS examination is quite uncertain", said a research student of Jammu University who has been selected for KAS. The petition was being heard by the Supreme Court even before the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission had declared results. In its interim order at the end of last hearing the Supreme Court stayed appointment of candidates selected by way of this examination. According to Court directive the selection authority, the Public Service Commission, was allowed to declare the list but the government was restricted from making appointment. Now the selections have been made but the government can not make appointment of these officers till final verdict from the Supreme Court. A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court by some aggrieved students who have alleged irregularities on part of the Public Service Commission. Prof Bhim Singh, chairman of the National Panthers Party, is contesting this case on behalf of aggrieved petitioners.
