CM can’t absolve himself from prevailing malady, says Gupta
7/8/2007 12:34:29 AM
Jammu July 7
Accusing the ruling leaders of the State of trying to play to the galleries on the issue of corruption and misuse of public funds, the former Union Minister and senior BJP leader, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta said that the policies and functioning of the men in authority breed corruption and it is not that the whole staff is corrupt. The corruption is there but for men at the helm of affairs and their policies, hence, the Chief Minister and his colleagues cannot absolve themselves from the prevailing malady, he observed.
Commenting on the recent statement of the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad at a function of the Kashmir University the other day wherein the CM revealed that “he had managed a whopping sum of Rs. 5000 crore from the centre for developmental activities but his government had spent only Rs. 100 crore in an attempt to force him to withdraw his Jihad against corruption”, Prof. Gupta said that this statement itself speaks the failure of this coalition to deliver goods.
He said that the corruption starts from the above but the cleanness cannot be possible from the bottom. The CM should come with a white paper that how clean are his colleagues in the government and what action has been taken to set his own hierarchy in order, Prof. Gupta asserted and questioned that what fate has met with the Accountability Commission which was set up with a bang to clean the Augean stables at the top.
The BJP leader in a hand out released here today alleged that this government has failed on all fronts to deliver goods and keep up their promises, now excuses are being found to cover up their own weaknesses.
He questioned that if the state staff spent only Rs. 100 crores out of Rs. 5000 crores, and why the remaining Rs. 4900 crores is not being utilized to provide just small relief to thousands of unemployed Engineers, Doctors and so many other highly educated youths.
If Rs. 200 crores is spared out of this unutilized sum, this could provide temporary jobs to over 5000 Engineers who are on the roads demanding their recruitment and Rehbar-e-Tameerat.
Similarly, other unemployed youths could be provided relief by opting for such schemes and development works could be executed, he added and regretted that a strange situation has been created but for wrangles within the coalition leaders who are playing party politics and gain more and more benefits for themselves and their respective parties instead of going by coalition Dharma.
Prof. Gupta questioned the Chief Minister that if the state were having a big sum of Rs. 5000 crores under the control, why over drafts running about Rs. 2000 crores were obtained for which over Rs. 700 crores were paid as interest on such overdrafts last year and the problem is still existing.
