| BJP says Patil would have lost in direct election | | | NEW DELHI, JULY 7 Its stinging public campaign against UPA-Left Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil notwithstanding, the BJP appears to have reconciled to the possible defeat of Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. An editorial in party mouthpiece 'Kamal Sandesh' has acknowledged that success in the presidential race would depend only on arithmetic. It said Patil would have lost had it been a direct election involving general public. "Election is a game of arithmetic. The person who will be ahead in arithmetic will become the President because the president is elected not by the public but by elected representatives. "But yes, if this right had been with the public, Patil would certainly not have been elected as the President out of these three candidates (including incumbent A P J Abdul Kalam). Wish it was so!" the Kamal Sandesh editorial said. The article came less than a month after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said in an NDA resolution that Shekhawat's success was definite. "The place that Abdul Kalam has taken (in the hearts of) young people and children of the country is exemplary. Even if you have one look at all the three candidates, the UPA's candidate is at number three today," the editorial said.
