It is Mattoo versus Mujoo
All India Kashmiri Samaj in practical dilemma
7/9/2007 12:32:44 AM

BL KAK
NEW DELHI, JULY 8: All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS), a conglomerate of nearly 48 Kashmiri Pandit groups and organisations, has been thrown into confusion, if not disorder, with the dramatic announcement in Bangalore by RK Mattoo about the launch of a new political party called J&K National Democratic Front (JKNDF). Several Kashmiri Pandit (KP) leaders loyal to the AIKS have been taken aback by the suddenness of Mattoo's announcement.
Equally amazing is Mattoo's disclosure that a core committee he had formed had come to the conclusion that the KPs required a political party of their own in the "present changing scenario to make the community relevant". More amazing than this is the choice of operations employed by RK Mattoo: Instead of announcing the launch of new politcal party for KPs from the Delhi-based headquarters of All India Kashmiri Samaj, Bangalore was chosen for making the 'big' announcement.
Kashmir Opinions, English fortnightly printed and published from New Delhi, has come out with a sensational report, divulging that Mattoo avoided meeting even his own organisation (AIKS) president, MK Kaw, and other office-bearers before his anouncement in Bangalore about the launch of the new political party. The July 1 editorial of Kashmir Opinions maintained that the uter haste and casualness accompanying the announcement "has raised many an eyebrow". The journal has posed: Why was the AIKS not associated with it and why was anouncement not made from its headquarters in Delhi? Is Mattoo having second thoughts about associating AIKS with this endeavour or does he want to appropriate the whole credit to himself, leaving AIKS in the lurch?
Some senior leaders of the AIKS have chosen to set the record straight by clarifying that while AIKS is committed to exploring the possibilities of forming a political party, they have had no idea that a political party with a name has already been announced. This development has triggered the demand by the constituents of the AIKS for an urgent meeting to discuss the whole issue.
Before making the 'big' announcement, RK Mattoo undertook a journey to Delhi and Jammu for interaction with the representatives and leaders of Kashmiri Pandits. According to Kashmir Opinions, Mattoo was "very selective" in his meetings. Mattoo, Kashmir Opinions divulged, was seen in Delhi only in the company of KPUF office bearers. "Studiously he avoided meeting active workers of other organisations like the KSD (Kashmiri Samiti of Delhi).....At Jammu, to, he has failed to meet any faction of the Panun Kashmir". Yet another question from pro-KP Kashmir Opinions: In their absence how can Mattoo claim that KPs in Jammu support fully the political party?
HL Mujoo is owner and editor of Kashmir Opinions. The publication triggered a furore when it made public RK Mattoo's reported comment: "Typical Bhatta (Kashmiri Pandit) coming from the smelly streets of Habba Kadal". With this began the war of words between Mujoo and Mattoo. Some senior KP leaders have been taken aback by this war of words. Mattoo has been accused of having gone into an e-mail slang with HL Majoo. And Mujoo has let it be known that Mattoo, not touching upon the main issue Kashmir Opinions had recently raised, had embarked upon a campaign of slander against him. Mattoo's reported charge: Mujoo was being paid and financed by some interested elements.
Extracts of RK Mattoo's e-mails to Mujoo published in Kashmir Opinions and replies by Mujoo clearly highlight how the two have crossed swords with each other. Mattoo's message to Mujoo: "I can guess (since I do not know you) through your e-mails that you have a genuine problem of a typical Bata. You don't bother about your sorry state of affairs but you bother about others' welfare. Thereby you always lose time and have missed the bus. Whether I have harmed KPs is for them to know. Who has given you the authority to cry for KPs? .....Try to come out of those smelly streets of Habakadal and park your self in the capital city of Delhi to catch with the changing world".
HL Mujoo's e-mail to Mattoo took strong exception to the latter's remarks vis-a-vis Kashmiri Pandits. Mujoo wrote: "You have not hesitated, in your weak defence, to picturise all KPs as coming out of those smelly streets of Habba Kadal. It is an insult to the whole community and to migrant KPs in particular. Do you consider yourself different than a typical batta from smelly streets of Habba Kadal?....I wish you all maturity and mental equilibrium to guide you in life".
