| Heavy rains claim 6 lives | | |
ET REPORTER Jammu, July 8: At least six persons are reported to have died, many others injured and over a half a dozen houses damaged in the heavy rainfall that lashed city and its outskirts and also in many parts of the region early this morning. Meanwhile, the rainfall also severely affected the power transmission system for half of the day and electricity was yet to be restored in some of the areas. The transmission and distribution system of Power department is reported to have suffered a huge damage as in many areas alternate arrangements were made till restoration of the main lines. Three children are reported to have died in the water streams arising out of heavy rainfall in Bawe area of Jammu. The Police, however, confirmed two deaths while efforts were on to trace the third one. In sector 9 of Nanak Nagar an elder women is reportedly missing since early morning as last she was seen venturing out of home while it was raining heavily. She has not traced as yet and it is believed that she might have been washed away in the nullah. Over a half a dozen houses collapsed in Prem Nagar area of old city. The Prem Nagar settlement on the banks of Tawi on Gujjar Nagar Road is predominantly inhabited by Christians. While there was total property damage in the Prem Nagar houses collapse but no loss of life have been confirmed by the Police. At least three persons are reported have been washed away in Poonch. As their bodies could not be traced they have been presumed dead.
