| RIK condemns anti-national reporting by Kashmir press | | | June 8th, 2007 New Delhi: Roots In Kashmir - An Initiative by the Kashmiri Youth has strongly condenmed the recent anti-national statement in a Kashmir based newspaper on its June 6 issue. The newspaper in a news report titled "Amarnath Board Targets Mahant Giri" had approved a comment by a reader "SOBI" that "It is time for Indians to go. Their Bagwan (Bhagwan / God) is wise enough as he has already left back...Please take a clue and you people also pack your bags...Don't humilate your religion which is very good...by recreating which is not there". Through this press release our group expresses its deepest concern towards the functioning of this online and print media group "KASHMIR OBSERVER". It has played with the sentiments of the Hindu community by approving this mindless comment on their website. Roots In Kashmir warns the newspaper of going ahead with such rhetoric news reporting for cheap publicity. The owners of Kashmir Observer should come out with a public apology in this regard failing which government should take strict action against such mindless reporting backed by some "motives against the nation". This communal reporting by this publication has reminded the minority community of the valley the horrors of January 1990 when terrorist groups gave out warnings to the Kashmiri Hindu community in the form of advertisements in leading dailies of Kashmir including Alsafa etc. Governemnt of Jammu & Kashmir and the central government should take a serious note of this incident and take some proper action so that such anti-national act is not repeated. Such media organisations play with the freedom of speech and press provided by the constitution of India. If Government goes ahaead with some tough cyber laws and a proper vigil, it will go in a long way to protect such unfortunate things from happening. The newspapers and other media groups who have exposed such anti-India activity have done a great contribution for the betterment of the media community
