Manmohan to get his 17th D.Litt from JU

Jammu, July 9: A rare honour for Jammu and more particularly for the University of Jammu, as the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh arrive here Tuesday to receive his career’s 17th degree of honorary doctorate of letters D. Litt.
Dr Manoham Singh who rose to the position of fourteenth Prime Minister of India, has to his credits highest educational qualifications and degrees of excellence from world’s some best Universities. He is the first such Prime Minister of India who comes from the back ground of academics and raised to the highest position in the country.
It is indeed a rare honour for Jammu and the University of Jammu, that the Prime Minister of India accepted to receive the honorary degree from the University which undoubtedly is the pride of the region. The Jammu University describes honouring the Prime Minister as an honour to itself.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is already recipient of 16 honorary degrees of D.Litt from various Universities in India and abroad. The honorary degree of D.Litt being offered by the University of Jammu is 17th in his career.
It may be mentioned here that the practice of offering honouring degrees in D.Litt has its origin in the United Kingdom. The degree of D.Litt is described as a higher doctorate, above the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and is issued on the basis of a long record of research and publication. The degree D.Litt. is awarded to candidates whose record of published work and research shows conspicuous ability and originality and constitutes a distinguished and sustained achievement.
According to the Jammu University authorities, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is being offered this degree for his outstanding achievements in whatever he has done in his life and for his contributions towards making peace and development in Jammu and Kashmir. “The degree is almost always an honorary degree often conferred to those who have contributed to the humanities and or society”, said a Jammu University officer.
Dr Manmohan is a recipient of honorary degrees of D.Litt and D.Sc (Honoris Causa)from following Universities: Panjab University, Chandigarh; Guru Nanak University, Amritsar; Delhi University, Delhi; Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi; University of Bologna, Italy; University of Mysore, Mysore; Chaudhary charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar; Kurukshetra University; Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala; Nagarjuna University, Nagarjunanagar; Osmania University, Hyderabad; University of Roorkee, Roorkee; Doctor of Laws by the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University (formerly Agra University); Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur
