| Chandr Shekhar’s death widely mourned | | | Jammu | July 9 The demise of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar who passed away at Delhi after a prolonged illness has been widely condoled by various political parties, intellectuals and organizations. District Congress Committee workers of Poonch in a condolence meeting chaired by Ch. Zaffaraull expressed shock over the demise of Chandra Shekhar. Workers in the meeting described him a great socialist. The Convenor J&K scheduled Tribe Development Council, Ghulam Ali Engineer described him a secular nationalist, who was committed to peoples welfare, and said that he was the only Prime Minister to grant Schedule Tribe status to Gujjars, Bakerwals and Gaddies. Prof. Bhim Singh, chairman of the JKNPP expressed deep shock on the death of the leading Young Turk, Chandra Shekhar and former Prime Minister who made a dent on the Indian politics by playing a key role to check militancy in J&K Prof. Bhim said it was he who in consultation with Late Om Mehta accorded ST status to the Gujjars and Bakerwals (all Muslims) in J&K thus turning the tide against the militancy in J&K. He visited the house of late PM to pay tributes to the departed soul. Bhim who had a long association with late Shekhar said that in his death India has lost a great son of India and the people lost a great champion of their rights and undaunted visionary and a revolutionary. A condolence message by the party was sent to the members of the family of Chandra Shekhar expressing its sympathy with the bereaved family.
