| Meeting deliberates on development of medicinal plants | | | Srinagar, July 10 (INFO)- A Meeting of the sub-group on development of Medicinal plants in J&K State was held here today under the Chairmanship of Dr. C. M. Seth, Director, State Forest Research Institute Convener of the Working Group at Forest Complex. Dr. Seth while initiating the discussion stated that field survey and study for the inventorisation and productivity of medicinal plants in forest area is very important. Collection of realistic data from the field is very necessary for formulation of an healthy herbal strategy and policy. He emphasized upon the Members of sub-group to expedite the collection of data both from primary and secondary sources and revived in detail the progress made in this direction so far by the team of field officers. While speaking he said that J&K Govt. is taking keen interest and initiatives to develop herbal sector of state to generate rural employment and boost states economy. He also informed about the initiatives taken by the state Natural Medicinal Plant board in this direction. Power point presentations were given by various officers regarding the field work already executed by various divisions in growing of planting stock and its subsequent planting out in the field. The Conservator of Forests, Central Circle, L. K. Sharma, S. P. Sharma, Conservator Working Plan Circle, Ashok Kumar Gupta, DFO, RVP Thein Dam and Project Officer, MFP Project, Jammu, Gulzar Ahmad Rangrez, DFO, Publicity and Planning Division, Srinagar and O. P. Sharma, Joint Director, SFRI gave presentations on the availability of various medicinal plants in the forest areas. The presentation was followed by interactive session. Dr. Seth, while concluding the discussion impressed upon the officers and members of sub-group that due to wide diversity of medicinal plants resources in the state it has great potential in changing the socio-economic conditions of people, especially those living near forest areas. He impressed upon all the participants to work hard and complete the given assignments well within the stipulated time period so that a realistic, practical, sound and viable Herbal Action Plan draft policy is formulated and submitted to Govt. for implementation on ground for sustainable economical growth in the State.
