| Revenue official convicted in corruption case | | | Jammu July 10-The Court of Special Judge Anti Corruption Jammu convicted a revenue official Mohammed Rashid, the then Patwari Village Garh Majur, Tehsil Akhnoor, for demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs.200 from complainant Daya Ram R/o Village Garh Majur Tehsil Akhnoor for getting a copy of (Fard Intiqal) mutation attested under Agrarian Reforms Act. Case FIR No.22/95 was registered at P/S VOJ on February 7, 1995 on the complaint of one Daya Ram S/o Sita Ram R/o Village Garh Majur Tehsil Akhnoor alleging that he approached the accused Mohammed Bashir then posted as Patwari of the area, for getting a copy of the mutation U/S 4 of Agrarian Reforms Act regarding his land falling in khasra No. 21 measuring 33.16 kanals. The said patwari demanded illegal gratification of Rs.600 at the first instance but later agreed for Rs.550 of which Rs.350 were already paid on February 6, 1995 to the said patwari by the complainant. The patwari was demanding Rs.200 more for issue of the copy of the mutation. In the course of investigation, officials of SVO proceeded to Akhnoor and the accused patwari was caught red handed while accepting bribe of Rs.200. The tainted money was recovered from his possession in presence of independent witnesses. After accord of sanction for prosecution by the Government, the challan of the case was produced in the court of law on January 29, 2006. In the course of prosecution, offences U/S 5(2) P.C Act r/w 161-RPC were established against the accused in the trial court for which Special Judge Anti Corruption Jammu convicted him to undergo RI for a period of two years and a fine of Rs.1000 in default of which he will have to undergo three months more punishment. The convicted official filed an appeal before the High Court against the order of the trial court. Single Bench of the State High Court in its order dated January 31 last up held the conviction of the accused but reduced the quantum of punishment of imprisonment to six months only. Since then the convicted patwari was absconding and did not return up before the trial court to face the conviction. The convicted patwari surrendered before the court of Special Judge Anti Corruption Jammu yesterday after issue of a legal warrant he was sent to Central Jail Jammu for undergoing the conviction
