| BSNL employees go on strike; telecom services to be hit | | |
NEW DELHI, JUL 11
Telecom services across the country could be hit as employees of state-run telecom firm BSNL today went on a strike to demand immediate placement of equipment contracts for the company's mobile network. "The strike started at 0600 hours. Workers of all the associations, unions are unitedly on strike. The strike is a complete success," V A N Namboodiri, joint convener of BSNL and MTNL employees forum, said here. The union would meet again later in the day to decide on whether the strike is to be continued tomorrow, he said. BSNL has 3.5 crore fixed lines and 2.4 crore mobile subscribers and is the largest telecom operator with operations in regions except Mumbai and Delhi. The employees went on strike after talks with BSNL management, Communications Minister A Raja and Department of Telecom Secretary D S Mathur failed yesterday. The Union wanted a written assurance from DoT on its demand that the contract for laying 45.5 million GSM lines would be placed to the selected vendors and that BSNL would not drop the 3G component from the contract. However, DoT did not agree on these conditions. Raja had earlier asked BSNL to drop 3G component from the tender as there was no policy on third generation networks. He had also asked the company to negotiate with Ericsson to reduce the contract price. A BSNL official said the company had a contingency plan ready to avoid disruption of services due to the strike.
