Jammu July 11
Trendy begging is stealing hard earned money of Jammuites, as on an average a beggar, be it a child or a adult male or female, earns between Rs 200-250 a day. It may be religious place or a busy market or even a matador stop one hears a typical heartrending voice of beggars compelling one to open his / her purse.
In fact no one can deny this that the number of beggars had multiplied in proportion to population and the spread of Jammu City. From where they pour in no one knows but they are getting huge emoluments in return. Without any age bar these filthy dressed men, women and the small children dog the visitors particularly the couples and the girls at any busy place creating a nuisance and forcing you to donate charity. “It is not charity but extortion as at times the children even catch hold of your dupattta making you odd in the market while some on Saturday threaten to touch your clothing with the oily hands. Really they simply make you to get rid of them at any cost, said Payal Nargotra a collegiate.
She said though some of them have genuine need of money but because of these many left unattended. They really are professional beggars, who find begging more lucrative than working you ask them to work they will simply ridicule you on your offer, a road side walker said. ‘I can earn up to Rs 6,000 from my profession, why should I go with you for just Rs 1000 or a bit more” is the reply tossed to me by a beggar at jewel Chowk said Ram Prakash.
Talking to the correspondents a female beggar at Bagh-e-Bahu said, “I have been here in this area for last few years and usually earn about Rs 300-Rs 400 on Tuesdays while hundred or hundred fifty minus on the other week days.’ “This is a nice and lucky place to her and for her family, she said on anonymity.
Other areas the beggars have listed the best earnings ones are Bus Stand, Jewal Chowk, Satwari, Ragunath Bazar, Vikram Chowk, Bagh-e-Bahu, Residency Road, Shiv Temple at Shalimar Road.
According to sources thousands of beggars were active in the Jammu city and rural areas and maximum were belongs to Bihar, Rajasthan, UP, Punjab, Delhi and some other sates Jammu beggars were also active in this also.
He said that they were active in the trade with all members of their families and their children were also active with them who also collected huge money he said this is a easy money trade where nothing mussel power losses and people give the money easily after looking their condition.
However within the charity and religious emotions of the people, this flooding of the beggars have also put the security agencies on their tenterhooks. The flocks of beggars near the vital security areas like Police Control Room and the Civil Secretariat has attracted their concerns, revealed highly placed sources in police intelligence. ‘That is why we have to forcibly flush them out from the sensitive areas during the Durbar Move in Winter Capital, an officer said on anonymity and added, “this infact has become a headache not only for people but also for the security agencies.’
Why don’t the police come to rescue people from this menace as the state of Punjab and UT of Chandigarh has instrumented the Anti Begging Act in late 70s to ban the begging and the crime associated with it, asked Rahul Soni a Computer Professional.
