Referring to the recent hype created by various political parties like PDP and separatists, he said that could be their political compulsion but army is dedicated to the cause of the people and welfare of the community all across the nation. ‘Operation Sadhbhavna became a symbol of unity and integrity when terrorists had left a large number of schools burnt and teachers killed, targeted and destroyed bridges, power transformers, state government buildings and community places and under this plan army re-erected the damaged schools and hospitals etc for the welfare of people, he added. ‘It was the Northern Command that took special care to conduct these operations in a humane and people-friendly manner to ensure minimum collateral damage. Simultaneously, through the Operation SADBHAVANA, troops of Northern Command applied the healing touch to win over the people by promoting development activities focusing on their basic needs, another senior official in Northern command said buoyantly but on anonymity. PRO Defence S D Goswami elaborating further on the much acclaimed Operation Sadbhavana said, “ the reconstruction activities from both the army and the State administration were synchronized and amalgamated harmoniously to generate synergy, with a clear focus to bring a palpable improvement in the quality of life of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.” The theme of the operation was to make people aware and help them to help themselves, the Army acted only as a facilitator and catalyst for development projects that were identified jointly with the state administration and the people, he added. Army started 45 Army Goodwill Schools catering 6799 students offering them quality education and provided employment to 346 youth. It has also two Mega Army Goodwill Public Schools that are under construction, one each at Pahalgam and Rajouri, with modern infrastructure / facilities, he added. ‘Students from remote areas are taken on educational tours to various parts of India , to familiarize them with the culture and development in the country, he asseted. Apart from this the army embraced another challenge to offer better health care to people and established 49 Primary Health Centres have been established in the remote and inaccessible areas of Jammu and Kashmir, he said. Further briefing about OP Sadhbhavna Goswami said, ‘about 1558 Medical Camps/ Veterinary Camps have been organised in conjunction with civil administration and medicines worth Rs 4.09 crores have been distributed to the poor and needy. Goswami also mentioned that the projects under OP Sadhbhavna in the pipeline for year 2007-08 included construction of Schools (04); renovation of schools (339); Primary Health Centres (57); free Medical/Dental/Veterinary Camps (270); Artificial Limbs Camps (04); Construction of roads/tracks (81); Construction of Bridges (15); water supply schemes (100); Villages to be electrified (320); Construction/maintenance of Vocational Training Centre/Community Develop Centre/Computer Training Centre (134) and Construction/maintenance of Women Empowerment Centre (90)
