NC pays tributes to Madr-e-Meharban
7th death anniversary observed as ‘Women’s Day’

Jammu 11 July: Several functions across the state today marked the observance of 7th death anniversary of Begum Akbar Jehan, former MP, popularly known as Madr-e-Meharban.
Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Jammu Province observed the death anniversary as Women’s Day. Quran-Khawani was performed at the party office in the morning to mark the day.
The main function was held at Party Provincial Headquarters- Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, here which was organized by Provincial President Womens Wing and ex-MLA Bimla Luthra.
Addressing the function, Mohammed Shafi Uri, former Minister recalled that it was not only in 1947 when Madr-e-Meharban came to the rescue of the people to heal their wounds but when NC came to power in 1975, her role in championing the cause of poor and down trodden was remarkable. She contributed for the State particularly in Indian Red Cross Society during 1947 and proved that she was ablest lady of the state who dedicated her services for the cause of down trodden and weaker sections of the society.
Rattan Lal Gupta, Sr. Vice President while paying tributes to Begum Akbar Jahan termed her as a beacon light for the freedom struggle and a symbol of sacrifices for the upliftment of women folk in the State and poor in particular.
Paying tributes to Madr-e-Meharban, Surjit Singh Slathia, Senior NC leader and former Minister termed he She thanked the women activists of the party for their contribution in observing the 7th Death Anniversary of Madr-e-Meharban – Begum Akbar Jahan. She said National Conference will pursue progamme and policies of Madr-e-Meharban and Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah as envisaged in Naya Kashmir.

Ch. Talib Hussain, ex-MP on the occasion highlighted the role of Begum Akbar Jahan on the political front and for the upliftment of poor, destitute and downtrodden of the state.
Bimla Luthra in her address, highlighted the services rendered by Begum Akbar Jahan, who had supported Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in all sphere of life. She said Begum Abdullah not only kept liaison with grass root level workers but also motivated the women folk to come forward to fight for their rights. She worked restlessly for bringing women at par with men in the male dominated society.
Among others who paid tributes to Begum Akbar Jahan included Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Vice President, M.R. Qureshi, MLC Chander Mohan Sharma District President Jammu URBAN, Mahinder Gupta, District President, Th. Kashmira Singh, ex-MLC, Jugal Mahajan, Veena Oberai, Lalita Sharma, Satwant Kour, Rita Gupta, Manveer Kour, Ram Saroop Sharma, Shyam Mehra, Vinod Bhalla, Pardeep Bali, Shyam Mehra, S.N. Manyal, K.L. Bhagat, Hilal Beig, Vijay Kumar Lochan, S Sucha Singh, Master Noor Hussain, Pinki Bhat, Anuradha Goswami, Vikrant Sharma, Ravi Sharma, Veena Choudhary, J.K. Sudan, A.K. Soni, Radha, Raj. Neelam Sharma, Mariyam Sheikh, Bayant Kour, Mohini, Kuldeep Kour, Santosh Handoo, Pinki Khalsa, Nargis Sitara, Amrit Varsha, Waris Gill, Ashanand Ganesh, Anil Sharma and Ajaz Jan.
Reports about observance of the day have been received from various district and tehsil headquarters also.
At Doda the NC held a meeting under the chairmanship of its District President Khalid Najeeb Suharwardy
Paying rich tributes to Begum Akbar Jahan, Suharwardy highlighted her unparalleled contribution to the society especially in women emancipation of women folk
A similar function was held by the party activists at Kishtwar which was presided over the sitting MLA Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo.
Paying tributes to Begum Jahan, Kichloo said that she was a symbol of sacrifices and always for the rights of the poor, down trodden and especially the women folk.
At a similar function held at Kathua the Ajit Kumar District President NC recalled the services rendered by Begum Jahan for the cause of the down trodden and weaker section of the society.
Reports about observance of the day have also come fgrom Ramban, Banihal and other parts of Jammu region as well.
