J&K's longest serving DGP may Delhi Police chief
7/12/2007 12:02:18 AM

ET REPORTER
Jammu, July 11: With Director General of Police Gopal Sharma having completed four years in office as top cop in Jammu and Kashmir, options are fast emerging for his replacement.
Sharma had replaced AK Suri in 2003 and he has already completed four years in office. Unlike his predecessors, AK Suri and Gurbachan Jagat, Sharma's period as DGP has remained non controversial. Even though Police did not make any extraordinary mark in anti-insurgency operations during this period, but during Sharma's regime allegations of human rights violations have remained bare minimum though with some stark exceptions like the Ganderbal fake encounters.
If official sources are to be believed, Gopal Sharma is tipped to be the next Police Commissioner of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Since he is already empanelled as full DGP with the Union Home Ministry, he may otherwise get the posting of Police Chief of any state or Director General of any Central Paramilitary Force. However, sources maintained that he was most likely to take over the Police Commissioner of Delhi.
An IPS officer of 1972 batch of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre, Gopal Sharma has the distinction of being the longest serving Director of General of Police in the state so far.
Normally an officer at the highest post in Police or civil administration serves for a period of two years but depending upon his performance and suitability with the Chief Minister the term can go beyond that.
Last year, after the recommendations of a search committee, a panel of four officers were drawn to select the new Director General of Police. The panel then included the names of Rajinder Tickoo, MK Mohanty, PS Gill and an IPS officer presently serving in Madhya Pradesh. However, the Chief Minister made recommendation to the Union Home Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office indicating his preference for continuation of Gopal Sharma.
This time, however, there are some officers in the race to take over as next DGP. Among the contenders are PS Gill (who is already in the panel) Kuldeep Khoda, the Additional DG CID and Dr Ashok Bhan, the Commissioner of Vigilance Organisation. It may be mentioned here that while choosing either Khoda or Bhan who are the IPS officers of 1974 and 1976 batches respectively the government may have to bypass some of their senior as was the case while choosing the present Chief Secretary.
