| Milkmen in J & K threaten to withhold supply | | Seek increase in prices | | Jammu, July 12, In a bid to mount pressure on government to accede to their demand of enhancement of prices, the dairy owners and Gujjars associated with milk trade have threatened to stop the supply in the open market, saying that the sale has already been stopped in Kathua district. The community representatives, addressing a press conference here today threatened to extend the decision of with holding the supply to the entire state if Government would not accede to their demands. Putting forth the demand, they said the people, particularly Gujjars who are traditionally associated with the rearing of cattle, are finding it hard to carry on the age old occupation in the backdrop of unprecedented hike in prices of commodities and services required for the production of milk, including, cattle feed, medicines transportation ,cost of living etc. They said that the present price fixed by Consumer Affiars Department is far less than the cost incurred on the production. The Chairman Dhodhi Gujjar Association Jamil Choudhary said that the Gujjar milk producers have unanimously decided to stop supply in local market and sell their produce in the neighbouring states. General Secretary of the Association, Vikrant Dogra said that the supply of milk is continuously decreasing as with each passing day people associated with dairy production are leaving this occupation for finding it very difficult to survive in the backdrop of increasing costs of production. He said if the price is not fixed keeping as per the cost of production and the nutritional value, the dairy industry would not survive any long in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
