| Gossip at funeral makes family decide to donate bodies | | | JAIPUR, JUL 12 It was cheap gossip at a funeral that made retired IAS officer Pukhraj Salecha make a decision he would rather donate his body for medical research. Three members of the Salecha family too shared the view and after death their bodies would be donated to the medical college. Most people do not maintain a dignified silence that is expected under such circumstances or share the family's grief but indulge in gossip. "I have seen people discussing Mallika Sherawat and her vital statistics at the cremation ground," says Salecha. He made up his mind after he returned from the cremation of a close friend. "I was shattered the way people were gossiping at the funeral ceremony. Thus, I discussed the idea of donating our bodies rather than cremating them with my wife late Rameshwari Salecha," he recalls. "I believe that everyone of us should make some valuable contribution to the society and that's what we have done," he says. "My wife too believed that it would be good idea to donate one's body as it would be useful for the medical students and service of the mankind," he adds her wish was fulfilled and her body was donated to the SMS Medical College here on June 13. When asked Salecha's 92-year-old mother Pyaari says "Jal ke to raakh ho jaungi, par aise shareer doctaron ke kya kaam aayege (if my dead body is burnt it will become ashes, this way it would at least be useful for doctors.)"
About her daughter-in-law whose body was given to medical college, she says proudly, "Koi galat kaam nai kiyo hai (She has done nothing wrong)."
She too wants like her son and daughter-in-law that her body too would be donated. "Beta bahu dei daan kar riya hai to main kyon nahien (when my daughter-in-law has already donated her dead body, when my son is doing the same thing, why should I miss this chance). Does she haves any pressure from his family to do this job, when asked, she replies, "Maahrey man oon karoon hoon(it is my own wish and there is no pressure from anyone of my family). Pukraj Salecha further says, "People believe that if cremated according to the beliefs and rituals of my religion, it gives us Moksha, but I believe that real moksha could be attained by good deed like this. Salecha and his family has inspired many to go in for body donation for the last ten years. Smita, Salecha's daugther-in-law says, "I am proud of them. Their motive is very good and we should admire that." "I am proud of the fact that when we took the body of my wife to donate it to the medical college, thousands of Jaipurites from every walks of life and even strangers accompanied us while we were going to the medical college," Salecha says. Various sections of the society have welcomed the step taken by the Salecha family as Dr Ashok Pangadia, principal of SMS medical college says, "In the last seven years we had just seven body donations but in the year 2007 so far we have got five body donations so far and we have nearly 95 applications for the body donation. This is a welcome change and it would be beneficial for the medical science, he says.
