| Land dispute claims life in Kathua | | | ET REPORTER Kathua, July 13: Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad may have launched a campaign against land grabbing but this still continues to be a cause of organised crime in the region. Death of a Kathua youth identified as Karan Singh is a pointers towards this serious menace which has spread a wide network and enjoys patronage of some black-sheep in Police and Revenue department. Karan Singh along with his associates and relatives had scuffle with a group of 21 people on July 27 last while guarding a piece of land which he claimed was his. The land situated in Kalibari area of Kathua had been a source of dispute between the two parties since long. On June 27, an argument broke out between two parties leading to a serious scuffle. In the melee, a youth identified as Karan Singh sustained serious injuries. His parents and relatives rushed him to a hospital in Amritsar in view of his critical condition. Since June 27, after battling between life and death for a fortnight, the youth finally succumbed to his injuries last evening. His body was brought to Kalibari late last night and the news of his death among the relatives and friends caused a panic leading to tension in the area. Demanding the arrest of the persons allegedly responsible for the death of Karan Singh, a group of people today blocked Jammu-Pathankote national highway at Kalibari. The protestors staged sit-in along with the body at Kalibari blocking the highway since 10 am today. While the police arrested four people allegedly involved in the clash, the protestors demanded arrest of all the 21 other persons who had manhandled Singh, sources said. Civil and police officials rushed to the site and were trying to pacify the protestors, they said. This is not a new case or a case in isolation where land dispute claimed life. Scuffles over the pieces of prime lands in Jammu region have almost become an order of the day. Recently, half a dozen cops of Jammu and Kashmir Police and officials of other departments including the Municipal Corporation and Revenue were injured in stone pelting when they tried to free 87 kanals of government land of illegal occupation. According to Police sources, over the past few years the cases of crime registered in various Police Stations pertain to the land disputes. Despite stringent rules made by the government the crime related to land disputes is on the rise, said a Police officer.
