| editorial | | Congress, PDP coalition under threat | | Although the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad has not named any one, yet his dig at the advocates of self rule by observing that the self rule for these people means rule by them and not by the people is a clear hint of his snub to the coalition partner of the Congress, the PDP, who has been advocating self rule for Kashmir. So long as PDP chief Mufti Mohd. Sayeed was the Chief Minister of the state, PDP never thought of raising the demand for self rule and this slogan was kind only after the change of guard in the state government with Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad replacing Mufti as head of the government and the power slipping from PDP to Congress. Thus so long as PDP man was heading the State Government, it was the self-rule for the PDP and when the Chief Minister's post went to the Congress the cry for self-rule was raised. By taking a dig at the advocates of self rule, meaning the PDP,whose leaders, Mufti Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti have been day in and day out making such demand, which has been originally mooted by Pak President, Parvez Musharaf and has been outrightly rejected by the Central government as well as the Congress party in the state, Azad has thrown clear hint of differences between the PDP and the Congress, the two main coalition partners in the state government over the vital issue with the PDP continuously harping on the tune of self rule and demilitarization as well as pleading for dialogues with the militants on the one hand and Pakistan on the other, even after the militancy escalating in the state as well as spreading its tentacles in other parts of the country as its evident from serial blasts in Mumbai, with government of India categorically charging Pakistan for its involvement in terrorism and then the two countries expelling each other's diplomats, the differences between the Congress and the PDP are bound to widen. There are reports that the Azad ministry expansion which was on the cards these days has been put off due to growing differences within the coalition partners over some vital issues. Ghulam Nabi Azad is learnt to be lately feeling preturbed over the PDP now and then causing him embarrassment by its pro terrorist overtures. Mehbooba Mufti's statement, implicitly contradicting Ghulam Nabi Azad's claim in the state legislature that human rights violations in J&K have lately come down, has been taken serious exception by Azad. Until some serious corrective measures are taken and the PDP changes its line of thinking and desists from giving pro militant and secessionist statements and distances itself from the anti India elements in Kashmir, there is every fear of coalition between the Congress and the PDP getting rocked. Under the given scenario of growing sourness in Indo-Pak relations and the Congress lead government in the Center releasing the necessity to harden its stand towards the militants and the separatists as well as their mantros across the border, the partnership between the Congress and the PDP is bound to suffer a jolt. In the wider country's context Congress can hardly afford to carry on the burden of terrorist and separatists friendly party, on its shoulders.
