| Train to Kashmir likely to start from Aug 15 | | | Jammu, July 13 Come August 15, 2007 and the long cherished dream of Indian railways of starting rail services in picturesque Kashmir valley will be fulfilled. A preliminary exercise, ahead of the official start of the train journey between Rajwansher and Awantipoora in South Kashmir on the eve of country’s 60th Independence day, was started today in the presence of Chairman Railway Board JP Batra who arrived here along with a team of engineers to supervise the trail run of the diesel mobile units along with engine on the 45 km long railway track. Official sources said efforts are afoot to start rail services in Kashmir on the eve of country’s Independence day this year.A senior railway engineer who supervised the work of transporting DMU units via 300 km long surface link said that seven coaches are already shifted to Kashmir and three coaches of DMU will reach Kashmir with in a short span of time.He said railway authorities are working overtime with missionary zeal to meet the August 15 deadline as everyone is eager to see train chugging in Kashmir valley. He said, we have almost completed the ground work but the final nod to start the train services will be given after the engineers gave their final nod. He explained that we have already completed the work on the Srinagar, Badgam, Kakapore and Pampore station. Giving details of the dream project he said, apart from building railway track there are various other design and structural changes made for the first time to suit the conditions in Kashmir valley. He said a specially designed 1,400-horse power engine will be used in Kashmir valley along with an auxiliary engine that will generate heat to keep the engine and its lubricants from freezing. Special arrangements are also in place to pump hot air into the coaches to keep passengers warm. Apart from this the railway authorities have developed indigenous technology to ensure there is no accumulation of snow on the railway track during peak winters and railway passengers can enjoy the smooth run.Hoping to enjoy the first train run in Kashmir the railway engineer said we are awaiting final nod at the end of the three day long visit of the chairman railway board
