Brain Drain: Will the termination of 60 odd doctors from valley discourage temptation to earn more?
7/15/2007 11:54:45 PM

Sanjay Khajuria
Jammu, July 15
Who doesn’t feel attraction for the greener and brighter pastures as all normal humans feel obsessed and strong passion to collect more worldly resources and look out for brighter pastures with a futuristic approach, observe majority of sociologists. Though they don’t defend the case of 60 terminated doctors but underlined the brain drain is normal course in any civil society.
‘Flight to better prospects’ by the top educated human resources from the state in fact is giving sleepless nights to not only state administration but also to the social scientists who predict it as a happening to have negative implications in coming times. ‘And virtually the social scientist are worried about the rate at which the brain drain is going on in the state, Arvind Kumar an expert in sociology said.
The specialists not only in medical sciences but in all components of the civil society have their significant role in the social set up, he said. If one recalls the former chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed soon after resuming the chair gave an ‘open invitation to all those serving in foreign soils to work for their land from where they have attained the basic education, he said and added, “the call turned out as a voice in wilderness. “We don’t have specialists in many fields available here as most of them have moved out to different states of the country and even outside. They are getting the benefits but at the end society will suffer”, said Rajinder Verma, a industrialist.
While people in Jammu are blaming the ongoing turbulence in the state as the main root cause but the experts have some other views. “Turbulence in state and the globalization phenomenon in world coincided, resulting in the brain drain, where a large portion of the qualified and bright brains moved out in search of better opportunities”, reasoned, Dr Pawan Arora opinioned. “We can’t view any of them in isolation. Unfortunately or fortunately they coincided but I have no doubt in claiming that turbulence increased the pace”, he added.
Though the exact figure of the said brain drain –the persons who had moved out is not available with any one but social scientists point out that more than 30%-40% of the top ranks of society had left the state for greener pastures and equal proportion of them are searching for the ways and means to follow them. This could lead our society to the brink of devastation if the experts are to be believed.
Ranjeet Sharma a Ph.d Scholar in the Department of Sociology in Jammu University, said, “like the slow poisoning the Brain Darin show its effectiveness in a coming times as we won’t be able to feel it right now but its consequences would be felt in near future.”
While adding Sharma said that we can’t stop it as its human tendency to go for higher side but we need to handle it to decrease the pace with which it is going on. “We have to provide the proper opportunities to the qualified professionals along with resources to retain them and I personally think that this is the only prompt solution”, he added.
Mostly multinational companies attract qualified persons both within the country and outside the country resulting in two types of brain drain, intra-national and international, he said.
