Despite registering cases in these incidents, the police have failed to solve any theft case and arrest the culprits. In the recent past several theft cases have also been reported from the Samba district and police has yet to make any headway in solving these theft cases. The regular incidents of thefts have made the life of the people miserable as they can not leave their houses as the burglars can strike any time even at broad day light. On July 11 last the thieves struck into two temples at Janipur and decamped with some cash and golden ornaments from these temples. According to reports, a group of thieves entered in Janipur housing colony and targeted two temples there. They broke open the donation box and looted money from it as also some golden ornaments from the statute of Goddess. In similar other incidents the thieves decamped with valuables and cash from Trimuti temple at Janipur on July 9. Not only this, the Arya Samaj Mandir located close to the Police station, Rehari was not spared. The thieves broke open the locks and after entering into the temple decamped with cash and ornaments from there. The thieves took away two necklaces and nose ring (Nath) of Goddess worth thousands of rupees from the temple. Earlier also the burglars had also broke into some temples in Akhnoor area on May 27 last and had decamped with cash and gold ornaments from the Jia Pota Mandir and Radha Krishan Mandir in the area. Although, the police have registered the cases, yet regrettably it has so far field to nab the culprits responsible for such thefts. Not only the religious places but the people in general too have become victims of the burglaries that had rocked the city and its peripheral areas. Thieves also struck at Usha Cafeteria in Lakar Mandi, Janipur area and had stolen cash and some other costly material from the house. On May 17 last, the thieves struck into the house of ex serviceman Avtar Singh and decamped with 80 tolas of gold and Rs.25,000 cash from the house while the family members were sleeping on the roof at village Tanda Burj in Samba area. This incident took place just after two weeks when the thieves struck in a big way in the house of a businessman Joginder Pal son of Roop Chand of Panjpila, Samba on May 3. They are reported to have looted over a lakh of rupees and some jewelry from the house. Due to the frequent theft cases the people have been spending sleepless nights as they fear that burglars might strike any where anytime. On June 21 some burglars struck in a house of Gopal Dass of village Jagdevpur area falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station, Rajbagh in Kathua district and escaped with Rs 18000 in cash and jewelry worth Rs.32, 000, the reports said. Locals believe that some outsiders along with the so- called ‘Zehar Khurrani group’ (who intoxicate their victims) have sneaked into the city and are carrying out their operations during this period when humidity and rise in temperature forces people to sleep in open or on roof tops in peripheral localities. When contacted a senior police officer said police is on the look out to nab the culprits and is investigating these cases.
