Lal Masjid effect: ultras fleeing?
7/16/2007 11:54:51 PM

In bizarre incidents in different parts of state, the security forces are observing exfiltration movement of militants fleeing to Pakistan occupied Kashmir through the Line of Control. Analysts believe this trend may have some connection with the Lal Masjid fallout.
Though the top bosses in different security formations are yet obtain an analysis of the trend, but reports have suggested that post-Lal Masjid operation some militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir are pushing off.
Just few days after the Lal Masjid siege and the following anti-fundamentalist operations in Pakistan, the Army has noticed incidents of exfiltrations- Pakistan based militants returning back to their part of Kashmir- across the Line of Control (LoC).
Last weekend, two militants were killed by the army in Kaluthara forest in Baramulla sector along the LoC while they were trying to move into the Pakistani side.
A Defence official, said that it was too early to term the exfiltrations across the LoC as a 'new trend', but admitted to being taken aback by the development as they expected a rise in infiltrations following the Lal Masjid siege.
The Indian Army, which has been monitoring the LoC for possible infiltrations, has issued 'fresh directives' to monitoring personnel to notice "any specific new trends" in the wake of the Lal Masjid operation.
Among the fresh directives issued are monitoring of militants' movement in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, overhearing their conversations particularly with regard to their reactions to the operation on the mosque, and their talks with the pro-Taliban elements in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
This year infiltration by militants from across the LoC remained on the upper sidea, and the month of April witnessed a spurt in the incidents with number of incidents trebling to 79, as compared to the same month of previous year.
However, in the last two months-May and June- the number of incidents remained almost same as that of the previous year.
