Srinagar, July 16 Over half a dozen teachers were injured when police used force to disperse hundreds of Rahbar-e-Taleem (ReTs) who staged protest demonstration in favour of their demands, here on Monday. Police said that about 26 protesting teachers were taken into preventive custody after they tried to gharo civil secretariat. Under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Education Volunteers Teachers Association the teachers gathered in large number at Lal Chowk this morning and staged a protest march towards the civil secretariat. As per the eyewitnesses, shouting slogans against the state government and in favour of their demands the teachers reached Jahangir Chowk, where a strong contingent of police asked them to disperse. "The teachers however, refused to return and instead tried to march ahead", an eyewitness said. "The police resort to batten charge to disperse the mob". However, when the teachers refused to budge police also used water cannon to stop the teachers from moving towards the secretariat area. Ghulam Muhammad, one of the protesting teacher said that over half a dozen ReTs, including some women, were injured in the police action. He said that few of them were hospitalized, while others were provided first aid from the nearby medical shops. Sources said that about twenty-six teachers were detained by the police and lodged at Shaheedganj police station for violation of section 144 CRPC imposed in the area in view of the security threat. However, the teachers were later released by the police, they added. The teachers appointed temporarily by the state government under centrally sponsored scheme have been demanding their regularization and enhancement of their wages. The state government, last year, had announced that these teachers would be regularized after three years of service.
