| Hanjoora is PDP nominee for LC chairman | | |
Jammu, July 17: As already widely expected, the Peoples Democratic Party has nominated its MLC from Badgam district, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjoora for the elections to the post of chairman of the Legislative Council. The post of the Legislative Council chairman, which is second most important in the state in terms of protocol, fell vacant earlier this year after expiry of six year of term of National Conference rebel Andul Rashid Dar. Since then, the senior most MLC P Namgyal has been acting as the pro-tem Chairman of the Council. The decision on Hanjoora's candidature was taken in a Political Affairs Committee meeting of the PDP which met in Srinagar under the chairmanship of its patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The name of Hanjoora, who unsuccessfully contested 2002 elections against the National Conference stalwart Abdul Rahim Rather in Chrar-e-Sharief constituency was proposed by senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig. It is learnt that the PDP nominated its candidate for the crucial election after evolving a consensus with the major coalition partner, the Congress. The Congress is now not likely to field its candidate and the contest of Hanjoora will be against a National Conference nominee.
