| PDP issues fresh warning | | 'Pull troops or destroy peace dividends' | |
ET REPORTER Jammu, July 17: Loudly welcoming the Prime Minister's statement on the political dialogue with Pakistan and within the state, the Peoples Democratic Party has once again warned about derailment of the peace process if the demilitarisation was not carried out immediately. The Political Affairs Committee of the PDP which met in Srinagar today warned that if troop strength was not reduced the dividends of the peace process will go waste and a historic opportunity will be lost. Reiterating its stand on reduction of troops and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), the meeting stressed the need for ensuring relief to the people in the security situation and rebuilding their confidence in the democratic institutions which is vital for sustainable peace in the positively transforming ground situation. "The ongoing peace process and positive changes in the ground situation cannot be made fully result-oriented and meaningful unless the initiatives taken so for are further strengthened and new initiatives are taken at the right earnest to restore public trust." For consolidating the gains of the peace and reconciliation process and to further perk up the ground situation for future initiatives there should be inevitably no let up in the momentum of the people-oriented measures. The present situation now demands political sagacity and visionary spirited initiatives to make a tangible difference to the State's political and economic scenario. The positive change in public mindset and their growing confidence in the democratic institutions and processes should not be allowed to drift away. "The Prime Minister's statement is a significant and positive move towards consolidation of the peace and confidence building process," the PAC which met here today under the chairmanship of PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed observed. The meeting reiterated that the peace process is an irreversible historical development as it is the only option to resolve mutual differences, improve the security environment and ensure the welfare and happiness of the people. "The recent developments in the region have reinforced the urgency of carrying forward the peace process with a focus on Jammu & Kashmir-specific confidence building measures for the amicable settlement of this long-pending conflict," the meeting emphasized. Acknowledging that the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh was working with commitment and sincerity towards achieving the objective of peace and prosperity for Jammu and Kashmir, the meeting observed that in the new scenario, India and Pakistan must pursue the peace process with more steadfastness in the larger interest of the region's peace and prosperity. "Both the countries must pursue J&K-specific CBMs with sincerity and in a time-bound manner so that in the economic development, the region as a whole and both parts of Kashmir could move together, as has been the stand of the Prime Minister."
