Construction of Mugal road: Rajouri, Poonch, Shopian traders up in arms
7/18/2007 12:17:50 AM

Srinagar/ Jammu July 17:
Exasperated over government's failure in removing the bottles necks for early completion of historical Mugal Road and diversion of Rs 35 crore from the funds meant for its construction, the traders of Poonch Rajori and Shopian have threatened to launch a massive agitation.
They have alleged that a group of Jammu centric Leadership in the coalition is creating hurdles in completion of the prestigious project for the fear of loosing a big chunk of business in the event of the execution of road.
While the traders of the three districts supposed to get the highest benefits on the completion of the road, have constituted a forum pursue the matter with government, the political workers of the arc rival parties of National Conference and peoples democratic in these areas have also joined their hands to support the forum.
As per the sources, the main stumbling block impeding the construction of the road is the part of the road passing through the Wild Life Sanctuary in the area which as per the Apex Court Directions calls for seeking consent from a High power Committee.
If sources are to be believed, former deputy Chief Minister who is also an advocate Muzaffar Biag has already agreed to pursue the case on legal front.
Sources said that Muzaffar Biag has given full assurance to fight the case to secure relaxation on the pattern of Leh Manali Road which also passes through a wild Life sanctuary.
"Another plea for seeking relaxations likely to be put forth is that since the road has a historical background, the execution would mean up gradation of the already existing road and not construction of a new road".
Meanwhile, people of twein border districts and Shopian are alleging that a group of Jmmu centric ministers are creating hurdles in the completion of the road.
Sources said R&B minister Gulchain Singh Charak had to face great embarrassment, during his recent visit to Shopian , where a group of Traders delegation led by their leader GM Talk openly blamed him and chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for the unrelenting delay in the completion of the road.
The traders also fall heavily on the visiting minister for diverting Rs 35 crore from the funds meant for construction of the road for some other work to be executed in Jammu.
