| Lone nominated for LC chairman | | Decision backed by Congress, | |
Srinagar, July 17 The political affairs committee of People's Democratic Party today nominated Member Legislative Council, Ghulam Nabi Lone, for the post of Chairman Legislative Council. Lone, resident of village Hanjoora in Chadoora area of Budgam district, was preferred over PDPs other two MLCs, Nizam-u-Din Bhat and Bashaarat Bukhari, the latter also being the Chief Spokesperson of the party. Sources said that Lone's name was proposed by senior PDP leader and former finance minister, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh at a meeting at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's residence in Srinagar, following which a unanimous decision was reached to nominate Lone for the post. The voting for the Chairmanship shall take place on 20th of this month during which Congress, who have already been taken into confidence by the PDP, shall also vote for Lone. When elected, Lone shall replace Abdul Rasheed Dar, who served a term of five years as the chairman. Sources said that Lone, a former practicing lawyer and an MLC for more than three years now, was preferred over his two competitors for his law background and being the 'least controversial'. "To his credit goes the fact that he is a founder member of the PDP," said a party source. Lone, also backed by other coalition partner Congress under an agreement that the two parties shall share the Chairman Legislative Council and Speaker Legislative Assembly posts between them, is all set to become the Chairman when the assembly session begins on 19th of this month. Lone contested three elections, twice for the Legislative Assembly and once more for the Parliament. A Congress member in 1996, Lone contested from Charar-e-Sherief Assembly Constituency only to be defeated by the former finance minister and senior National Conference leader, Abdul Rahim Rathar. Lone then joined People's Democratic Party as a founder member and contested the 2002 Assembly elections again from Charar-e-Sherief home constituency; this time the margin of defeat, however, was reduced to 1700 votes only. Lone then contested against the National Conference President, Umar Abdullah, for the central Kashmir Parliamentary elections where he lost only with a few thousand votes. By then, lone had already gone on to become a member of the Legislative Council and continued to be the same for these years. PDP's Budgam District President, Lone has been very active in politics since joining PDP and is the man behind organizing biggest rallies for PDP in Budgam as well as other districts.(
