| Sad story of discrimination: Tragedy in Jehlum is 400% bigger than in Chenab | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL Jammu, July 18: Much has been said and written about the discrimination against Jammu region. But there is one conclusion, the people of both regions have nothing against each other but the leadership is out to create deep gaps which may take centuries to bridge up. May it be the development funding, political representation or share in employment, Jammu suffers a raw deal at the hands of establishment. This imbalance in all sorts of representations has fuelled a deep divide among the people of both regions. In some short sighted circles, there may be some grudge against the people of Kashmir. But the wisdom suggests that people of either regions have nothing against the other. The establishment and the political leadership has such a jaundiced view which can not see the people of both regions with one eye. There is one yardstick for one region and another for the other region. in the life time the people of Jammu region keep struggling for their rights but it is shocking to observe that even the dead are dealt with a discriminatory policy. Very recently a boat capsized in the mighty Jehlum River in the north stretch of Kashmir. The tragic incident tool toll of eleven innocent lives. The travellers of the boat perished in the waters, there bodies could not be retrieved and therefore were presumed dead. Though the loss was irrecoverable for the families but it was a shared pain for the entire state as eleven hands of livelihood perished in the cruel waters. As expected of any administration, the state government worked out a relief package for the bereaved families. Each family has been given a compensation of Rs 4 lakhs each. Though monetary help can not make up the loss of a life, but this magnanimity of the state government deserves all the appreciations. There is another story which explains how government does regional discrimination with the dead bodies. It is expected that the pubic memory would still be fresh about a tragic incident that happened over River Chenal in Kishtwar area last year. A bus accident washed away 33 lives in a spur of moment. Several days of search operation launched by divers of navy and rescue teams of the Army could not fish out any body from the accident site off Shashu in Kishtwar area. All passengers were therefore declared dead. In this case too, the state government came up with a big heart to offer relief to the bereaved families. Unfortunately, the heat was big but there was a hole in it. The compensation for each family was worked at Rs 5,000. One can understand, if the compensation for an accident in Jehlum River is Rs 4 lakhs and Chenab River is Rs 5,000, there can not be an end to the regional divide which the establishment is out to create.
