Flood situation improves in Surat
8/11/2006 5:59:41 PM

AHMEDABAD: Flood situation has improved in Surat due to less release of water from Ukai dam on Friday even as thirty per cent areas in the city were still under two to seven feet of water, officials said.

The worst-affected areas like Rander, Adajan and Katargam were still submerged and lakhs of people living in these areas are still facing problems in procuring food and water and essential items like milk and medicines.

Communication network and power supply are still affected in several areas, officials said.

"As the water outflow has reduced to 3.93 lakh cusec, the flood waters have receded in many areas in the last 12 hours. If good weather prevails in catchments area of Ukai dam water will recede from the city by Friday night," district collector Vatsala Vasudevan said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has postponed his visit to Surat Friday evening due to bad weather. Control Room sources said the inflow of water in Ukai dam is just 2.95 lakh cusec of water while the outflow is 3.93 lakh cusec and the level of dam is 343 feet, two feet below the danger mark.

On Thursday night, an angry mob burnt furniture of a hospital of Surat for delay in providing treatment to those affected by flood, officials said. However, situation was brought under control by police, they added.
