| From J&K 85 MLAs votie; Biag, Jan remain absent | | | JAMMU 19th July Polling for electing New Indian President was held in Srinagar amid tight security at Legislative Complex with 85 LA members turning up to poll their vote till 2 PM. Former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Biag of PDP and GM Jan of National Conference had not turn up for voting till last report came in. While NC member G M Jan has failed to come for voting as he is for past same time, the reasons for forcing Biag to stay out from the presidential polls were not immediately known. Biag was also absent in the house which met here today and was adjourned after an obituary reference moved by Speaker Legislative Assembly Tara Chand to condole the death of former Prime Minister Chander Shakher, former MLAs Ayub Khan , Haji Buland Khan and Abdul Kadoos. While, as obvious, Congress-People's Democratic Party (PDP) alliance is supporting United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pratibha Patel, the main opposition in the state Assembly National Conference also announced to support the UPA candidate, changing its earlier decision of joining third front launched by AIDMK Chief Jaylalita. In the 87 member house, Congress has 20, PDP 19, National Conference 25, Communist Party of India-Marxist 2, Panthers Party 4 and Bharatiya Janata Party 1, while remaining are independents and support Congress. Meanwhile elaborate security arrangements were made for convening the state Legislative to face any possible attack from militants. Security forces deployed in large numbers had erected barricades cheeking all the vehicles passing on all main crossings of the summer capital.. Traffic was restricted on all routes leading to the Assembly secretariat located near historical Budshah Bridge in heart of the city.
