| CM pays tributes to Chander Shekhar, Ayub, others | | |
Srinagar, July 19- Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister, Chander Shekhar describing him as a great secularist who was a bold, honest and upright politician.
Speaking on the obituary references in the two Houses of the State legislature that met here today, Azad said the former PM did not compromise with principles and the rebel in him would always fight for the cause that remained close to his heart. He said Mr. Shekhar received love and respect in ample measure form all political leaders, cutting across party lines.
Azad described the former PM as a great orator and recalled that complete silence would prevail when he spoke in the Parliament as all members listened to him with rapt attention. He said he would support the statement or move of even a member of the opposition party if he found it to be correct. He said politicians like him were always in minority. He said in his death the country had lost an able and well meaning leader who was a movement unto himself.
Chief Minister recalled his association with Mr. Shekhar and said the two of them were close neighbours in New Delhi for 11 years and spent 26 years together in the Parliament.
Azad also paid glowing tributes to the memory of former legislators, Mohammad Ayub Khan, Haji Buland Khan, Abdul Qudoos Azad and Mir Abdul Khaliq who passed away recently. He said Ayub Khan was closely linked with the people and worked for strengthening democratic and secular values in the State. As member of the State Constituent Assembly, MLA, minister and MP, his contribution to the State polity and welfare of the people would always be remembered, Chief Minister added.
Azad recalled Haji Bulan Khan as a leader who served his area and people with full commitment and dedication. He said although he was known as a Gujjar leader but the fact was that the constituency he represented had the maximum number of electorate in non-Gujjars. He said he got an opportunity to know Haji Sahab more intimately after the formation of the coalition government in 2002 and found him a very amenable and polite person. He said all through his life the late leader worked for the uplift of the backward sections of the society.
Chief Minsiter also recalled the services of Abdul Qudoos Azad and Mir Abdul Khaliq as legislators and grass root leaders and said in their death the State had lost effective public voice.
Members of the political parties in both Houses joined Chief Minister in paying tributes to the departed leaders and observed two minute silence in their memory
