| In Pratibha's bank 12768 votes from J&K | | | ET REPORTER Jammu, July 19: In all probability, the United Progressive Alliance's Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil is believed to have clinched a record number of 12768 votes out of total 13324 votes from Jammu and Kashmir as polls went off today. 85 members of the legislative assembly out of the total 87 today cast their votes for the Presidential Elections in the lobby of Legislative Assembly in Srinagar today. Two members of Parliament out of total ten from the state, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah also cast their votes in Srinagar . The other MPs who were in Delhi participated in the election there. National Conference MLA Ghulam Mohammad Jan and PDP's Muzaffar Hussain could were the only legislators who could not cast their votes. The terminally ill Jan is in Jammu, it is learnt that Baig too was not well; therefore he could not cast his vote. It may be mentioned here that the per vote value of each legislator from Jammu and Kashmir is fixed at 72 while that each Member of Parliament is 708. Therefore the total strength of votes from this state comes out to be 13324. The coalition partners Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress, the main opposition National Conference and almost all independent legislators claimed to have votes for the UPA candidate Pratibha Patil. With Panthers Party already declaring its support to the NDA Candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and possibility of two other legislators –BJP and JSM –having voted against Pratibha Patil, the total votes in favour of official UPA nominee can be 79. Put together, the value of 79 votes of the legislators and ten Members of Parliament, Pratibha Patil was sure to have bagged 12768 votes from Jammu and Kashmir if there were no cross votes.
