Legislature Houses meet, adjourned after obituary

Srinagar, July 19: Both Houses of Jammu and Kashmir legislature today met in Srinagar but adjourned without transacting any business as on the day one the members paid tributes to the former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar and the former legislators who passed away recently.
Rich tributes were paid to the former legislators Mohammad Ayub Khan, Haji Blund Khan, Abdul Qadoos Azad and Abdul Khaliq Mir who passed away in the recent months after end of budget session.
Speaking on the obituary references in the two Houses of the State legislature that met here today, Azad said the former PM did not compromise with principles and the rebel in him would always fight for the cause that remained close to his heart. He said Mr. Shekhar received love and respect in ample measure form all political leaders, cutting across party lines.
Azad described the former PM as a great orator and recalled that complete silence would prevail when he spoke in the Parliament as all members listened to him with rapt attention. He said he would support the statement or move of even a member of the opposition party if he found it to be correct. He said politicians like him were always in minority. He said in his death the country had lost an able and well meaning leader who was a movement unto himself.
Chief Minister recalled his association with Mr. Shekhar and said the two of them were close neighbours in New Delhi for 11 years and spent 26 years together in the Parliament.
Azad also paid glowing tributes to the memory of former legislators, Mohammad Ayub Khan, Haji Buland Khan, Abdul Qudoos Azad and Mir Abdul Khaliq who passed away recently. He said Ayub Khan was closely linked with the people and worked for strengthening democratic and secular values in the State. As member of the State Constituent Assembly, MLA, minister and MP, his contribution to the State polity and welfare of the people would always be remembered, Chief Minister added.
Azad recalled Haji Bulan Khan as a leader who served his area and people with full commitment and dedication. He said although he was known as a Gujjar leader but the fact was that the constituency he represented had the maximum number of electorate in non-Gujjars.
The legislative council also paid tributes to the departed leaders.
