| Congress, NC pre poll alliance: win-win situation for PDP | | | Jammu: The alliance between National conference and Congress being predicted for forthcoming State Legislative Assembly elections if materializes would make the battle trouble-free for Peoples Democratic Party. It would help it in giving practical shape to its distant dream of attaining power of its own. Any pre-poll alliance between the two is going to be detrimental for both the parties. If one recalls the 1988 State Legislative Assembly elections, Congress, the then second major political party of state and National Conference, the largest, were in alliance and the result isn't hidden to any body. In Jammu and Kashmir , both NC and Congress are in the field from 1947. In fact these two parties have had always their role to play in government formation. In this situation people by and large used to choose between the two on the grounds of their performance. In 1988 elections when people came to know about the pre- poll alliance between congress and National Conference, they were left with no option than to support the third force which came into existence as a result of alliance. The third force, Muslim United Front, under the leadership of Dr. Nissar Ahemed Quazi came into being. Although, the alliance surfaced victorious but still people talk about unfair means that kept the Front away from power. Some people are even of the opinion that the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir is as a consequence of those "unjust means" What encouraged Mufti Mohammed Syeed to form a political organization, PDP, are the happenings that developed after the Congress- National pre poll alliance. Adopting more or less the same line the MUF used that time. In 2002 elections, Mufti Mohammed Syeed managed to win a good number of seats, mostly from Kashmir valley but not enough to earn him Chief Minister’s seat of his own. His dream, however was realized when a political party congress supported him. This time if congress NC pre poll alliance matures, it will remove all the hurdles in his way. However, both the parties can go for post-poll alliance to make life difficult for PDP.
