| Students stripped for med test, parents furious | | | New Delhi: In a shocking incident, over 200 boys of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, New Delhi, were made to strip and their genitals 'examined' as part of a "routine medical test". The test was done by doctors on behalf of a well-know private doctor of the city -- and all without the consent of the parents of the boys. The doctor is the head of the paediatrics department of a Noida-based private hospital. The survey -- which was not a Government mandated project -- was apparently done to detect hernia and hydrocele in class 9 and 10 students. The outrage of parents followed after a few of the children refused to be examined and the test was abandoned thereafter. The school's Acting Principal, Vijaya Subramanian, has defended the decision to examine the genitals of 200 boys saying no student was forced to undergo the test and that it was a voluntary exercise. However, she refused to comment on whether the parents were consulted. "The minute we got to know about the discomfort level, the school authorities and the doctors spoke to the children. We explained to them that this was voluntary. No one would force them to undergo the test," she said. Meanwhile, students allege that the doctors were neither wearing gloves, nor washing their hands after examining each student. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development says that though there is no written rule, it is a moral protocol to inform the parents of the students that such tests are being conducted on their children. This point will also be made a part of their Offences Against Children Bill.
