| Lone elected Chairman Legislative Council | | | SRINAGAR, JULY 20 – The Legislative Council today elected Mr. Ghulam Nabi Lone as the Chairman of the Council. Mr. Ashok Shamra of Congress moved a motion proposing that Mr. Ghulam Nabi Lone MLC be chosen as the Chairman of the J&K Legislative Council and Mr. Ved Prakash Gupta seconded the motion. A similar motion was also moved by Mr. Bilal Ahmad Lodhi of PDP which was seconded by Mr. Ali Mohammad Sofi. However, the third motion of Mr. Mohammad Rasheed Qureshi of National Conference proposing that Miss Sakina Itoo be chosen as Chairman of the J&K Legislative Council could not be moved as the entire National Conference had boycott the proceedings and no member of the party was present in the House, when Acting Chairman Mr. P. Namgyal called for moving the motion. Prof. Bhim Singh of Panthers Party wanted to raise a point of order which was disallowed by Mr. P. Namgyal as such the members also left the House. The Chairman then put to vote the motion moved by Mr. Ashok Kumar Sharma and Mr. Bilal Ahmad Lodhi proposing Mr. Ghulam Nabi Lone to be chosen as Chairman of Legislative Council. The twenty two members present in the House unanimously voiced in favour of Mr. Lone. However, Mr. P. Namgyal asked the members to stand up if they were in favour of Mr. Lone. All the 22 members stoop up. He then asked the members present in the House to stand up if any of them was not in favour of motion, no member stoop up. Thus the Lone was declared elected by 22 votes against zero. Earlier, Mr. P. Namgyal gave three minutes time to the opposition members to return to the House before he put the motion to vote, saying that the division has taken place as such three minutes time is being given to the opposition members to return to the House, however, no opposition member return. The new Chairman was greeted by members and carried to the chair. Mr. Lone then carried forward the proceedings till the House was adjourned by him till August 20, 2007.
