Jammu, July 21
Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo, representative of Global Human Rights Defence, today released a 30-page report on minority human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir state for the year 2006-2007.The report also carried 73 pictures depicting scenes of atrocities on minorities committed by militants.
While releasing the report Mr Chrungoo said that the document will be included in the Global report to be released in September 2007.He said that the report includes incidents of human violations on all minorities including Kashmiri Pandits.Dogras,Sikhs,Christians.
Several academicians and doctors spoke on the issue of human rights. Dr Jitendra Singh,an eminent diabtologist, said the issue of human rights is a philosophy and not politics. He lamented that both mainstream political leaders and separatists tried to exploit the issue of their political purpose. The case was similar to some human rights activists who also attempted to register their presence by depicting one side of the story of human rights only.
He said that not only Kashmiri Pandits and other Hindus but muslims in Kashmir were victims of human rights. In this connection he referred to fatwas and diktats issued by militants and religious leader directing women to wear burqa, stop attending educational institutions. The would, from time to time, direct people not to view TV programmes, including movies, telecast through cable network.
Dr Jitendra Singh said that not only civilaisn but security personmel were also victims of human rights violations. In this connection he referred to the Hazratbal siege of 1993 and said while those who had laiud the siege of the holy shrine were served with dainty mutton delicacies those of the security personnel guarding the shrine were victims of human rights violations as they stood guard for days together without being provided with delicacies.
He called for framing an agenda so that those campaining against false propaganda launched by the vested interest blaming the security personnel for human rights violations were fully exposed. “We need to become first Mahatma Gandhi and then educate people, including the student community,on human rights.”he added.
Dr B.L.Kaul human rights activists and adviser to the Globan human rights defence,Mr Prem Singh,President Sikh Migrants forum,Prof. R.L.Kaul spoke on the occasion. They said that it is the duty not only of security forces but of civilians to respect human rights. They appealed to those supporting the false campaign to come forward and expose them so that innocent security personnel and other Government agencies were not unnecessarily accused of violating human rights.
They said that once people, irrespective of cast, creed and region, joined hands to expose the nefarious designs of so called champions of human rights, the upper hand enjoyed by militants in violating human rights would become a thing of past.
