CM calls for industry relevant training courses in polytechnics
7/21/2007 11:29:30 PM

Srinagar, July 21
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has underlined the need for demand driven and industry relevant training courses to meet the growing requirement of professionals, especially in private sector. He asked officers of technical education to devise training courses in keeping with the market demand.
Azad, who chaired a meeting to review the working of Kashmir Government Polytechnic and Government Polytechnic for Women here today, called for a re-look at training courses and their fine tuning so that job avenues for pass outs from these institutions were easily available.
Commissioner/ Secretary, Technical Education, Pramod Jain, Secretary to Chief Minister, Pawan Kotwal, Principal Kashmir Government Polytechnic, Srinagar, Shaista Shamim and Principal, Government Polytechnic for Women, Srinagar, Fahmida Shah were present.
Chief Minister said the problem of unemployment in the State was peculiar in nature as educated youth were not drawn to self employment here but waited only for government jobs whose absorption capacity was very limited. He said he might have addressed one lakh public meetings across the country during his political career but did not find a single instance where a group of youth with placards raised slogans to demand jobs. This sight, he said, was very common in J&K and held those politicians and rulers responsible for spoiling the lives of the youth who sell them dreams of government jobs when these were not available. He called for change in the mindset among the educated youth and asked them to look for avenues other than in government sector.
Chief Minister enquired about the placement of pass outs of the two institutions. He was informed that 76 pass outs from Women Polytechnic were absorbed in private sector since 2000-01 in various disciplines. Similarly, the placement percentage in Kashmir Government Polytechnic was 68, 88, 92, 95 and 98 in 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06.
The two Principals briefed the Chief Minister about training activities at their respective institutions and also referred to some of the problem areas. They pleaded for immediate filling up of vacant faculty positions, increase in pay structure, relaxation to make academic arrangement till vacant positions were filled, early completion of library block in Women’s Polytechnic and construction of water sump for the hostel. They also advocated for registration of training courses offered by the polytechnics in employment exchanges and fine tuning of recruitment rules for better career promotion avenues for the faculty.
Fahmida Shah showed pictures of the recent flood that submerged the Women Polytechnic complex at Bemina and told the Chief Minister how she and her colleagues had to toil to save the record and costly equipment in the institution buildings. Azad highly appreciated the effort.
Chief Minister asked Mr. Jain to explore the possibility of contractual appointment against vacant faculty positions till the recruitment process was completed by the Public Service Commission. He also told him to visit the two institutions along with Secretary to Chief Minister and MD, JKPCC to take stock of the problems and report back to him. He also asked the Secretary, R&B to macadamize the link road leading to the Government Women Polytechnic at Bemina.
