Farooq aghast on bad reports
7/22/2007 10:27:02 PM

ET REPORTER
Jammu, July 22: Once again taking the opportunity to reiterate that he is serious in state politics and has already taken over the command of party to steer into forthcoming assembly elections, former Chief Minister and National Conference patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah has lashed out against those who said that he was hobnobbing with the Congress led United Progressive Alliance leaders.
Reacting to the reports appearing in a section of press that he had approached the UPA leaders for his nomination for the election of Vice President of India, Dr Abdullah said such news items have been planted by some frustrated elements.
He pointed out that many parties and leaders in Jammu and Kashmir were worried about his presence in the state's political scene and were scared of his decision to take the party into next elections. Abdullah described such reports as baseless, mischievous, misleading, factually incorrect and politically motivated. He said that these reports are a manifestation of those who are badly shaken by his public resolve announced last year to lead the National Conference in the next assembly elections. He said such reports are being planted in some newspapers who are closely linked to the political ideologies of certain political groups within the state by the parties who are frustrated and having failed the people of the state see a miserable defeat for themselves in the ensuing elections.
Dr. Abdullah deplored such mischievous attempts by some vested interests to unnecessarily create confusion in the minds of the people of the state and asserted that such designs will not work and he is and shall remain in the state politics and serve the people of the state and the National Conference within the state of the J&K.
Dr. Abdullah also refuted a report that he or any of his family members had approached anybody for his nomination to the Vice President's post. He said on the contrary he was approached by some important people of the country from various political parties to know his mind on such a proposal but he politely declined such offers in view of his commitment stated position to stay in politics in the state and actively campaign and contest in the state's next assembly elections.
Referring to the party's decision to vote for Pratibha Patil, Dr. Abdullah said it was the unanimous decision of the party Working Committee chaired by the Party President Omar Abdullah and this decision was taken with the sole objective off strengthening the secular forces in the country so as to strengthen the secular fabric of the country where all the countrymen can live in peace and harmony and this decision was not to please any individual or party.
Dr. Abdullah advised the ruling political elite in the state to work for the betterment of the people of the state and address the grievances of the poor, downtrodden, backward and unemployed in the state rather than indulging in a politics of intrigue and malicious propaganda.
The NC Patron said such petty political machinations based on malicious lies are the traits of some politicians of the state and their politics thrives on such acts. He said these politicians in the past have been responsible for the stifling of democracy in the state by spreading false canards in a bid to either gain power or stay in power as they are doing now. He said such petty politicking will not work and these politicians are exposed before the people of the state and the people's verdict in the coming elections will give them a befitting reply.
Dr. Abdullah said he was here to stay in the state and shall continue to work for the welfare of the people of the state.
