| Praja Parishad rejects BSP’s offer on merger, favours alliance | | | Jammu,July 22:- The Praja Parishad, led by Chander Mohan Sharma, has rejected the BSP offer for merging with the organisation, headed by Ms Mayawati,in order to facilitate repeating the Uttar Pradesh experiment in Jammu and Kashmir during the next Assembly poll, due in September-October 2008. The idea of floating a BSP-Praja Parishad front, which will be an alliance between the Dalits and the people belonging to the upper casts, was discussed by Chander Mohan with the BSP General secretary,Narender Kashyap, who is incharge of the party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, here the other day. The discussion was a followup of the Praja Parishad's move to float the front for measuring swords with the BJP,the Congress and the National Conference in the next election in the state.Chander Mohan Sharma said that the talks remained inconclusive and he has been asked to come to Lucknow and finalise the alliance arrangement with Ms Mayawati. Mr Sharma said here today that he would leave for Lucknow within next 10 to 15 days and in the meantime he would discuss the offer of merger of Praja Parishad with his party colleagues in Jammu. However,he made it clear that he would not accept any merger because "we want to retain the identity of Praja Parishad." Inside reports said that since the equation between the Congress and the BSP at the national level has started becoming smooth the Congress may explore the possibility of joining hands with the BSP in Jammu and Kashmir. The need for going in Congress-BSP alliance may arise once the alliance between the PDP and the Congress gets ruptured. Some National Conference leaders too favour electoral adjustment with the BSP in the Jammu region which could help the party led by Omar Abdullah to cause a major dent to the Congress and the BJP.
