| Arun Kaul’s death condoled | | | July 22nd, 2007 New Delhi: In an emergency meeting, Roots In Kashmir (A Kashmiri Youth Initiative) has deeply condoled the death of noted Kashmiri film director and screenplay writer Arun Kaul. Born in Srinagar, Kashmir on 12th August 1933, Kaul shot to fame when his documentary "DIKSHA" won the national award for best film in 1991. In early 1990s his Production House Vyeth (name of River Jehlum in Kashmiri) Televisions started news feature "Kashmir File" with Doordarshan which highlighted the excesses committed by terrorists in the Kashmir valley. The programme had to be closed when its anchor reporter Saiuddin Shafi was gunned down in broad daylight for raising voice against terrorists. He has been a screenplay assistant of veteran filmmaker Gulzar for the films 'Lekin' and 'Ijaazat' besides having written the screenplay for the film star-studed "Chandni" of Yash Chopra. He has also produced a film named "Ek Adhuri Kahani" directed by Mrinal Sen. His television documentary "Dharma Kshetra" won the NFDC Award in 1986. RIK Global Coordinator from Atlanta, Veer Wangoo, termed the death of Arun Kaul, "as a great loss for not only the community but the entire film world and the country". He said, "Kaul came from a middle class background and his documentaries and other works depicted the real life, which are quite difficult to find these days. Roots In Kashmir coordinator, Amal Magazine, while remembering the days of Kashmir File and Turning Point on Doordarshan, was shocked at the attitude of the government and the film world towards Arun Kaul in his last days. "He was a true activist and never bothered for money or fame. He truly died in oblivion". Roots In Kashmir, chapters in New Delhi, Jammu, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Ahemdabad, Baroda, Faridabad, Gurgaon and United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (USA) have expressed deep shock on his death. Kaul is survived by his wife Sarmishta Kaul and two sons. He breathed his last in AIIMS in New Delhi on Saturday morning after a prolonged illness. Roots In Kashmir in further cultural and social campaigns will focus and highlight the positive works done by Arun Kaul and never will let his great works of cinema and news go unnoticed.
