| MLA Jan passes away | | |
ET REPORTER Jammu, July 24: Member of Legislative Assembly from Poonch, Ghulam Mohammad Jan, passed away here today. Jan was 60 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, his predecessors Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Dr Farooq Abdullah, Ministers, legislators and senior political leaders have expressed shocked and conveyed condolences to the family on the demise of Jan. A National Conference leader, GM represented the Haveli, Poonch assembly constituency in legislative assembly second time in a row. He was first elected in 1996 and then got re-elected in 2002 with a comfortable margin. Jan was seriously ill for past some time and in view of his deteriorating condition was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Government Medical College here last night. Born in 1947 in village Sawjian-Gagrian of Mandi tehsil in Poonch district, Jan was an active political and social worker. A forest contractor by profession he remained a Vice President of the National Conference's Poonch unit before being elected as a legislator. He was also associated with a number of social organisations and worked for the cause of Pahari speaking people even though he enjoyed popularity among all sections of society he represented. Jan was a soft spoken and submissive kind of political leaders. He used to attend the assembly sessions with deep sincerely and would always fight for the cause of the people of his constituency. In a condolence message, Azad expressed deep shock and grief over the death of Mr. Jan, who represented the Haveli constituency in the State Assembly, and described him as an able legislator who eloquently raised public issues in the House. He said the demise of Jan has left a number of his friends and colleagues in a state of bereavement. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Patron J&K National Conference – Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President Omar Abdullah and General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed in a joint statement have expressed shock and grief over the sad demise of Ghulam Mohammad Jan, MLA Poonch. They expressed their heartfelt condolences and sympathies with the family Gh. Mohd. Jan and prayed to almighty God to grant peace to the departed soul and forbearance to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
