| 63600 fruit plants to be planted under TM in Udhampur | | | UDHAMPUR, JULY 23 Department of Horticulture Udhampur would cover 350 hectares area by planting 63600 fruit plants of different species in various parts of Udhampur under Horticulture Technology Mission and Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan during the current financial year. In Udhampur Constituency 110 hectares, 160 hectares in Ramnagar and 80 hectares area in Chenani-Ghordi constituency would be covered for plantation purposes under these centrally sponsored schemes. This was revealed in a meeting of district officers held to approve and finalize Rs. 95 lakh Annual Action Plan under Horticulture Technology Mission (MM-II) for integrated development of horticulture in the district for the year 2007-08. District Development Commissioner Udhampur, Mr. O.P. Kalandria chaired the meeting. Chief Planning Officer, Chief Horticulture Officer, Chief Agriculture Officer, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer and District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Udhampur were present in the meeting. To create water resources the department would construct 25 shallow wells, one deep bore well, drip irrigation and sprinkle system in one hectare area each during the period. Under transfer of technology programme, the department has set the target to organize 50 farmers training camps within the state and 24 outside the state. Besides the department would organize 28 awareness camps to motivate and aware the farmers about the latest trends in horticulture technology. Giving the resume of the last financial year, Chief Horticulture Officer, Mr. J.L. Raina said that under Area Expansion Programme, the department planted over 1.28 lakh fruit plants in the district thereby covering 810 hectares area under orchards. He further said that 38 farmers were imparted training outside the state under transfer of technology programme besides 14 awareness camps held at different zones including one fruit show organized at Sangaldan (Gool). Speaking on the occasion, DDC said that Udhampur district is bestowed with unique potentialities for growing all kinds of fruit plants ranging from sub-tropical to temperate. He said expansion of horticulture would change the fate of economically weaker sections of the society in a big way. He urged upon the officers to put in their sincere efforts in educating the farmers especially of remote areas for adopting horticulture in a big way. He also stressed to implement the current plan under TM-II in letter and spirit.
