| When grandma in Pratibha got the better of the politician | | |
PUNE, JUL 23 (PTI) She skipped Maharashtra during her offical Presidential campaign. But the caring grandma in Pratibha Patil did visit a newborn in a city hospital in the first week of July, shrouded in utmost secrecy. The newborn was the grandson of the President-elect, who had been rushed to the K E M Hospital here from her hometown Jalgaon in a critical condition following a lung infection. A team of the K E M medical staff brought the infant on a ventilator to Pune in a 12-hour journey and put him under treatment in the neonatal department reputed for its advanced equipment, hospital sources told PTI today. Though embroiled in a vitriolic campaign launched against her by the Opposition, the would-be President could not suppress her grandmotherly instinct and air-dashed here at night, went straight to the hospital and had a look at her grandson who was fighting for life. After spending just half-an-hour and reassured by the attending doctors, Pratibha left straight for airport to return to the heat and dust of a bitter campaign for an election that threw up India's first woman President in the July 19 polls. Dr Umesh Vaidya, who headed the team of neonatal experts, said the infant, admitted on June 27, was discharged and transferred to mother Pooja Udaysingh Patil- Pratibha's daughter-in-law, on July 5 after a successful treatment that put him out of danger. The hospital authorities also successfully managed to keep Pratibha's nocturnal visit under wraps as per her wish. The hospital sources, however, confirmed it today without specifying the date and time of the rendezvous an anxious grandmother had with the bundle of joy for the family.
