| Govt comes up with steering committee to save wetlands | | | Srinagar, July 24: In yet another desperate attempt to save the fast degenerating wetlands of the state, government today constituted a fresh State level Steering Committee entrusting it with the job of formulating Master Plan for initiating execution of conservation activities in the identified wetlands areas. The new Steering Committee to be headed by Chief Secretary have been constituted in suppression of the government order no 527 GAD of 2005/ 10-05-2005. The order to this effect was issued here today. State level Steering Committee shall be responsible for discussing management action plans for the identified wetlands before forwarding the proposals to government of India. The wetlands in Jammu and Kashmir are under severe threat from the persistent encroachments resulting into unabated increasing human interventions in these highly fragile bio-diversity units, besides their silting due to deforesting. While government has been claiming that it has evicted most of the encroachment on famous wetlands, these have witnessed a sharp decline in inflow of migratory birds. Presently there are seven wetlands in the state identified under National Wetland conservation Programme which include Hokarsar, Wullar, in Kashmir Tso morari, Tisgul Tso, Pangong Tsar in Ladhakh and Mansar,Suransar in Jammu.
